Our work in the Music and Entertainment Sector
YGT Law and YGT Yimbalji have are working with venues, record labels and festivals to improve cultural integrity and responsibility within the music and entertainment sector. Read more about some of our work within the music sector below.
In 2018, Yalanji and Mbabram elders and cultural authorities met in Cairns. We said that what our people want is friendships, because friends are committed to working together with a good heart, mind and spirt. Friends also put in the work to save the relationship when issues arise. We stay at the table, it becomes about the integrity and responsibility rather than about who is right and who is wrong. We want unity.
YGT has created Cultural Integrity and Responsibility Program to bring the idea of relationships and friendships to life. By no means does it usurp or replace the knowledge and wisdom of the Country. The Dreaming guides us in all our actions. Our Indigenization of western approaches and methods is about respect, impact and legacy. Cultural Integrity and Responsibility
Fortitude Valley Music Hall &
FVMH and TT’s Cultural integrity and responsibility Journey began in late 2019. In December of 2019, Ruth Link, Director at YGT Law and Biocultural knowledge gave a talk to the Queensland Music Board on Cultural Intelligence, which was attended by John Collins (JC) of FVMH/TT, and John Mullins of record label Dew Process. In September of 2020, Brett Gibson emailed Ruth and requested a meeting to discuss the possibility of doing a strategy to improve cultural intelligence across both venues (FVMH/TT).
We called our approach Jimaldamal - our approach to making a good fire, rather than a destructive bush fire.
FVMH have made a commitment to Jimaldamal, and to making a good fire that reinvigorates, calms and creates relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People and Community. The vision co-designed by YGT, the Triffid and the Fortitude Valley reflects this commitment to ongoing learning and reflection:
'Our vision is to build genuine connection with people and country, based in continuous learning and reflection. We will create a culturally safe workplace and endeavor to create positive change in our community using good fire that heals rather than harms Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and Communities.'
In December, 2022 we held our first Meet the buyer forum to bring together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander suppliers with buyers in Hospitality, music and entertainment sector to build strong relationships and friendships.
Dew Process & Secret Sounds
YGT and Dew Process started their journey together in 2020, where we held a workshop for the Queensland Music Board which John Mullin attended as a member. Following that workshop in 2020 and throughout early 2021, YGT Director Ruth Link and John met a number of times to discuss Dew Process’s requirements and commitment, alongside YGT’s work with the Fortitude and the Triffid. Rachel Carmichael of Secret Sounds soon came on board, and has committed to the Jimaldamal journey. Dew Process and Secret Sounds have expressed a genuine authentic commitment to join the process and undertake the cultural integrity and responsibility journey that commences with Jimaldamal.
Jimaldamal is the foundation Cultural Integrity and Responsibility Action Plan empower the cultural ecosystem and providing cultural safety and empowerment opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Dew Process in collaboration with YGT are deeply committed to to creating changing in the music industry through a shared deep desire to strengthen the cultural eco-system and create a culturally safe workplace, and building genuine relationships with local and discrete Aboriginal Communities.
