Passing on information was more in song and in stories retold over the many generations. Being a small island community, not much could be lost through distance and lack of contact, so the need to etch the record somewhere special was not of great importance. Beauty and social status were done through artwork in facial and body scarification with intricate designs that are not practised today. Much though is recorded in the Haddon Collection.
